Is the name of the book I'm reading. It's an inside look at sorority life. I never belonged to a sorority; my school didn't have them. However, I imagine that if it did I would have joined one. Two close friends were in a sorority and it always seemed like so much fun, minus the binge drinking. Anyway, this book is really interesting, but mainly depressing.
Seriously, being surrounded by binge-drinking, eating disorders and promiscuity seems like it'd be really depressing. Really, how can that kind of life be fun and meaningful? Some of the stories go far beyond just that. Encouraging girls to break up with their boyfriends and then encouraging that girl to sleep around, demanding pledges sleep with guys, one girl claims her sorority arranged her date rape.
I want to read this book, but honestly I'm having a hard time reading it. It just makes me sad for the thousands (millions?) of people who live like this. There is so much more to life that what these girls seem to be living. And honestly, what a huge step back we've taken as women. From this book it seems more like these girls are interested in getting guys attention through sex than through their minds or personality. I can't imagine how that benefits us as a gender. To me it seems like all it does is encourage guys to only be interested in women for sex.
Enough of that. Even though it's sad, Pledged by Alexandra Robbins is an excellent read.
